Apple Launches Subscriptions on App Store

A couple of weeks ago, Apple rolled out its daily newspaper, The Daily, for the iPad. Now, Apple has announced a new subscription service available to all publishers of content-based apps on the App Store – magazines, newspapers, videos, music, etc.  It will have the same digital billing subscription service as The Daily.

The service will work the same way customers have purchased apps and in-app purchases.

iPod Classic To Retire or Refresh

source mobilewhack

According to the site AppleBitch, supplies of the iPod Classic are running low. Retailers such as Target do not have any in stock, while Amazon has the 160GB Classic on sale, the shipping window is 2-4 weeks.  If you are not partial to a color choice it appears you can get the darker colored version fairly easily.

The last update for the Classic was September of 2009 and it was anticipated to be refreshed at the September 2010 Apple event. The refresh was not revealed.  Some speculation is that Apple may be in the process of updating the Classic now that Toshiba has updated their 1.8 inch hard drives to 220GB.

IntoNow App Helps Friends Connect With Television Shows: Cool or Lame?

IntoNow is a free app that identifies television shows by listening to them and allows users to share their viewing habits with friends through social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter. However, I have to wonder if this is a useless app or a fun and helpful tool? You decide.

IntoNow works like this: Users select the TV icon from the app while watching a television program and it will identify the episode of the show and (sometimes) indicate whether the program is airing live or if it is a rerun. I just tested this from home and IntoNow did not tell me which episode of the Steve Wilkos show I was watching. For shame! Also, the app may have trouble hearing the program if the volume is low, if there is background noise, or if the show is somewhat old or obscure.

After IntoNow identifies the show, a user has the option of sharing this information with friends via Facebook or Twitter (“I’m watching Sponge Bob Squarepants right now. That Squidward is so grumpy.”) and then search for the program on Netflix, iTunes, or IMDb.

Apple Announces New Line of iPods, Changes to Apple TV and iTunes

Apple held a press conference today to announce exciting new changes and features to Apple TV and its wildly popular line of iPods. Here's a brief overview of the news:

The new Apple TV, which will be available in 4 weeks, will now cost $99 rather than $229. It now offers rental movies and TV shows rather than movies for purchase and owners will also be able to view videos on YouTube, movies from Netflix, and photos from Flickr.

The new iPod Touch has sharper screen resolution and front and back cameras to handle Apple's FaceTime video chats. The iPod Nano now has a touchscreen and the iPod shuffle has a sleek new look. The new iPods will be available next week, though pre-orders begin today.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs also unveiled a new version of iTunes with a new look and a new social networking feature called Ping. With Ping, iTunes users can follow the music selections of their friends and artists they are interested in. The new version is available now.
